The Jersey
race is the most defined milkmaid English race, originated in the small
island of Jersey.
Developed
near the year 1200 it was adapted to the necessities of their inhabitants
and the pastures of the environment. Accepted as the most probable seminal
races base, are the small black livestock of Britain and the big red
livestock of Normandy.
In 1763,
the islanders motivated by the interest that their small cows produced,
decided to preserve the characteristics of the race and they prohibited
the introduction to the island of any bovine cattle that were not dedicated
to the task, and they assured in this way, the genetic purity of the
race. In 1833, the first association of breeders, Jersey Agricultural
and Horticultural Society is constituted and in 1836 takes place the
First Show.
Their distribution
is worldwide, being the first exports to England in 1811, to U.S in
1817, Australia 1854, N. Zealand 1862, Canada 1868, South Africa 1877,
Sweden 1893, Denmark and Brazil 1896, Argentina 1909 and Uruguay in
1910.

Characteristic
of the Jersey
General
It will
hold angularity and strength, indicating efficiency in the production.
Color
They vary
considerably in color, but the most general characteristic is brown
from very clear until almost black, with or without white stains. The
muzzle is black surrounded of a halo or ring almost white and the tuft
of the tail can be black, white or mixed.
Size
The ideal
weight of the Jersey cow in production is of 1,000 pounds. Its height
at the level of the cross is in a Jersey cow 50 inches. Usually the
Jersey cow has its first breeding between 23 and 25 months. They reach
their total maturity at the 6th year. The weight of the cow is influenced
by its condition and period of nursing.
Products
of centuries
More than
five hundred years of genetic selection have transformed the Jersey
cow inan excellent milk cattle. The first unified intent of improving
the conformation of the Jersey began in 1834 in the island of Jersey,
place of origin of the race. In that same year a scale of points was
developed and took place the first local exhibition.
When the
Jersey was imported to U.S.A., they made national exhibitions, allowing
the breeders to select those characteristics related with the production
of milk, and to establish quality standards that served as commercial
frame to the race. In 1932 The American Jersey Cattle Club
inaugurated a classification program for type. This classification allowed
the breeders to observe how close their animals were conformed, in connection
with the ideal type of the race. This program and their subsequent improvement
have been able to reaffirm those qualities associated with a long life
of efficient production, such as a dairymaid constitution, sufficient
corporal capacity, strong and symmetrical paws, a good mammary structure
system, and producing high levels of milk.
At the
moment, authorities and technicians daily recognize that the Jersey
has a bigger proportion of animals that come closer to the ideal type
for milk production. Especially their good conformed udders and their
stronger fixation recognize the Jerseys. They are also more angular,
less rough and big than the cows of other races.
